A Smile [old poem]

I watched you through sleepy eyes.
Trying to find a smile
On your beautiful lips,
But only sadness swallowed warm tears.

Why are you crying my love?
I was longing to say.

You come here every day
And cry until your eyes are dry
Then you kiss me and leave.

Where is your smile?
Where is your laugh?
Is our love worth only tears?

I don't want to leave you
But I must.
One last wish to connect our hearts
Will say goodbye in place of useless words.

A smile,
When with last strength
I squeezed your hand.
The greatest gift given by you.

I am sorry to leave you so soon.

A penny for your thoughts
